Lesbian Tragedy: Why the Media Convinces Us That We're Unhappy

HIGHLY INFORMAL RANT:

Why is it that most representations of lesbian romance center around depressing shit? Like, girls can't possibly fall in love and have a healthy relationship UNLESS it is galvanized by, or centers around, some type of personal insecurity, neurosis, family or social tragedy or... whatever. And this seems to have filtered into how a lot of chicks conduct their relationships in real life, too. All I can say is, WHAT THE HELL? Why can't people make an effort to forge POSITIVE bonds, instead of negative ones? Why do people buy into all that stereotyped crap enough to model their lives after it? I mean, being supportive of whoever you're with or into or whatever when they're going through something rough is great, but it shouldn't be the entire basis of being together. Goddamn. Haven't these people heard of psychotherapy before?

My theory is that this "depression=romance" thing is rooted in two distinct trends:

1. Our culture tells us that (for adults, anyway) it is unacceptable to openly/publicly express affection, caring, or any other "mushy" stuff that makes us look/seem vulnerable, UNLESS we are doing it to support someone when something goes wrong. (i.e.: at a funeral, after a break-up, natural disaster, school shooting, etc.) It is considered "corny," "weak," or generally "laughable" to express appreciation for other human beings outside of the context of tragedy.

2. Mainstream society/religion tells us that there is something inherently wrong/unnatural/abnormal (that is, TRAGIC) about not bowing down to patriarchial interpersonal dynamics (or patriarchy in general), and so lesbian relationships can only be understood/tolerated when they occur

A. as a result of negative environmental factors (past molestation or rape, pressure/"conversion," mistreatment from men, etc.),
B. within a heteronormative context (dressing/living like the "middle class," raising children, getting married, etc.),
C. within a gender normative context (no "queering" of relationship roles - maintaining butch/femme dichotomy), or
D. as a result of mental illness (sociopathy; serial killing type stuff).

Since the vast majority of media consumers are heterosexual, the framers of media messages are careful to toe the line when it comes to how gay people are presented (No, this isn't just a lesbian issue - though that's my particular bias. Remember how "revolutionary" everyone thought Will & Grace was? Well, guess what? IT WASN'T. All it did was reinforce unrealistic effeminizing stereotypes of gay men. Why? Because it would have been threatening to most of the audience to do otherwise.). If their presentations are "too" raw or alien (a.k.a.: realistic) for most viewers/readers/listeners, they lose ratings, and/or advertisers (and thus, money). It simply is not profitable to make genuinely representative media widely available. (And NO, The L Word DOES NOT COUNT. Lipstick lesbians purposely designed to titillate a straight male audience and who are ostensibly working class and yet magically manage to live über-upper-middle class lifestyles are NOT representative of the majority of us - who are actually poor and androgynous. Assholes. And while I'm on that tangent: MTV and VH1's horrible showboating of pseudo-bisexuals and crappy beach party experimentation is not sexually revolutionary, either. It's retarded. Plain and simple. Now girls aged 15 to 25 across the country suddenly think it's "cool" and hip to act like they're lesbians...usually just so they can brag about it to people later, or because they're too unnattractive to have a boyfriend. Either that, or they simply take it as a cue to get it on with chicks just so they can avoid drawing out traumatic sexual abuse issues. Which is by far THE most obnoxious trend to ever sweep the world of dykedom. Let me re-emphasize: ASSHOLES.)

Anyway... as far as "hope for the future" goes, I have none. I don't expect advertisers or major media conglomerates to stop kowtowing to the very people who keep them in business any time soon. While Brokeback Mountain was a good movie, notice how there have been no plans made for anything remotely paralleling it for lesbians. Why? Because the people who greenlit Brokeback Mountain knew that gay men wouldn't be its biggest fanbase - straight women are. Cowboys are an enduring sex symbol for straight chicks (go to any pop country concert to see for yourself)... that's the only reason the guys in that movie weren't limp-wristed flamers. It's also the only reason it was approved of in the first place. Now let's see how many years (decades?) it takes for a major movie studio to produce a compelling lesbian romance. (Don't hold your breath.) In the meantime, the closest thing we have are independent and foreign films (most of which are either totally crippled by an overabundance of the aforementioned "depressing bullshit," or are just shallow and campy, albeit cute - see D.E.B.S.).

And since mainstream media has such an overwhelming impact on the perceptions of most people, I also have no hope that the stereotyping will be reduced any time soon. The old stereotypes are simply being joined or replaced with new, equally insulting and limiting ones. And, once again, genuine individuality is being obscured and marginalized in the process, just as genuine activism (a la ACT UP) has been replaced by "Straight But Not Narrow" bumperstickers, mailing checks to HRC, and joining an "I SUPPORT GAY MARRIAGE" MySpace group. What we are seeing is the further objectification, commercialization, and subsequent cheapening of sex, the fetishization of an already horribly commercialized pseudo-subculture, and the obscuration of the real issues and the resulting alienation of those of us who are both gay and don't have our heads permanently super-glued up our own asses. If this is "enlightenment" or "liberation," I want no part of it. You can take your pretend revolution (sponsored by Bud Light) and shove it so far up your ass that it finally breaks into the empty space where your brain used to be. Now go back to watching the latest episode of A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, already, you fucking retard. (And don't forget to cut your wrists after you get off the phone with your girlfriend later tonight. Always remember - it's your responsibility as a happy, carefree, Generation Next bisexual to have at least one complete nervous breakdown every two weeks and to constantly drown all your problems in chemicals.)

The Pity Issue (old, random set of notes that rambles on and goes nowhere)

"No pity for the weak?"

- What is "weakness"?

WEAKNESS = lack of motivation to better oneself, educate oneself, and think for oneself (usually rooted in low self-opinion and a desire to defer responsibility for oneself to others...which probably itself is from lack of self-esteem, actually - if you know your own potential and love yourself, you wouldn't need to cry on the world's shoulder while simultaneously slapping it in the face because you choose to continue to believe that it's "the world's" fault that you are the way that you are right now and that you've gone through what you have. It ISN'T. It's not "the world." It's the fault of an inherently faulty economic system, and/or inherently faulty human beings - be that YOU or the people who may have mistreated you.)

- What about varying environments and abusive backgrounds?

I don't think those things should be ignored, and I also tend not to think they are absolute determinates of failure and unhappiness. There's a balance there somewhere... but I still tend to think some extreme circumstances (which are common to the most economically-disadvantaged sections of society) make it inevitable for some people to be genuinely hopeless.... take away capitalism and foster anarchism, and this problem would melt away to reveal the true untermenschen - those simple fucks who are the pathetic, useless flesh bags that they are for no other reason than that they are inherently stupid and weak. Honestly, unlike a lot of other Satanists, Thelemites, and other assorted Nietzschean types, I really don't think that there are as many genuine untermenschen as is commonly thought, but I still think they are essentially the majority. (When you consider the fact that most people on the planet are extremely impoverished, there remains the possibility that perhaps genuine untermenschen are really the minority...though in our opulent Western society they are certainly the majority...(but then again, maybe not - we can only know once/if capitalism is abolished). Of course, that brings up the notion that perhaps capitalism breeds stupidity - and I think that it does. It thrives off of it, of course. People need to only be educated enough to run the machines in the factory and stay in line so all the greedy fucks on top can cash in on it all. That's why anti-intellectualism has been aggressively fostered in our society for so long - because it keeps the status quo intact and prevents the ruling class from pulling out the big guns on us. Up until the rise of the internet and the advent of public libraries, all information was filtered though the lens of the ruling class. This hasn't really changed much, what with public education now fulfilling the role of instilling passivity in our children. It's no wonder that only distinct personality types are genuinely autodidactic - more extroverted types rely on social interaction to teach them what they know of the world... and I don't think that that makes them "inferior" to us introverts - I just think that it means that the socio-economic system needs to be destroyed so that critical thinking and responsibility can become what is instilled in extroverts through their dealings with others. And I think that, in the meantime, we übers need to do what we can to foster logic and critical thinking in those around us... there are a variety of methods for accomplishing this: the Richard Dawkins way, the Socratic method, teaching, promoting reading programs and supporting public libraries, off-handedly mentioning taboo items or unpopular facts in casual conversation to spur thought, openly/unapologetically/happily being who you are regardless of the fact that you are the most extreme minority of all extreme minorities, and/or practicing counseling/psychotherapy.

Meaninglessness?!?!

It's almost 8 a.m. and so I guess I just pulled an all-nighter on the internet. Again. For like, the millionth time. (SomethingAwful.com is my new favorite site. Go there. Behold it in all its useless, random, hilarious glory. You too shall feel the inexorable pull of its sarcastic sexiness. And it can go for HOURS.)

I tend to think that needlessly depriving myself of sleep is one of the main reasons I look and feel older than I should (aside from the whole "fringe extremist lesbian genius living in backwoods hicktown" thing). Yet I keep doing it. For no real reason...other than total, uncontrollable internet addiction and boredom I guess.

It suddenly occurs to me that I have a lot of positive memories associated with sleep deprivation. Sleepovers and hanging out with friends always included the added element of staying up far too late or never going to bed at all. Walking around different places goofing off and doing utterly-pointless-yet-fun things almost always happened several hours after curfew. The most intimate, touching, and meaningful conversations I've ever had have all occurred during the wee hours of the morning in the dark or burgeoning dawn. Perhaps I'm unconsciously seeking to reconnect with that sense of joy and companionship which I've lost over the years. The internet has become my surrogate social life. I grew up while everyone else stayed the same... so now I have no one left (as far as "close" friends are concerned). I have people that I talk to that I have lots of history with, but I don't really relate to them anymore and so the whole thing is one-sided. I also have a few relatively new people that I get along with really well, but I don't get to hang out with them as often as I'd like, and even when I do, they're not people I can bond with on a deep level. They're just people who are enthusiastic about a lot of the same ideas, attitudes, issues, et cetera that I am. Which is awesome in itself, but... I still feel like something's missing. I guess I got really accustomed to always having a "best friend" figure around, so now that I've lost my (most likely) last one, I kind of don't know what to do. On the one hand, I don't feel lonely, mostly just bored (and - of course - hurt and angry at you-know-who), but on the other I would really like to just have someone to share stuff with (which, now that I think of it, I could never do with her anyway).

I really think I just need to move away from here and meet different, better kinds of people. I mean, I've been obsessing over Kelsey again for chrissakes. I never even see her and she (as always) doesn't like me enough to even bother calling or anything. I guess she's sort of serving as my "mental rebound" from Black-Doughnut-of-Doom for now, since I have no alternatives... but at the same time, I know I really do like her. The draw seems to primarily be a combination of her sense of humor, sensitivity, and - here's the biggie - the "watching a train wreck" effect...i.e.: the absolute horribleness of the idea disables me from really pulling away from it. Plus, I honestly would like her to...initiate...me. I can't think of going through that process with anyone else and not regretting it (I shudder to think what I almost let the Doom-Doughnut do.). At least with her I wouldn't have any expectations of commitment. I suppose it would be loving, albeit in a purely friendship-oriented way... which I have no problem with. It'd be...nice, I think. But...I still don't think it'll actually happen (Since she obviously doesn't want it. This from the chick who regularly screws people she doesn't really know and who did stuff with some of the most unattractive people I've ever seen. I mean, I know I'm no Angelina, but for fuck's sake! I know I beat out Chanda at least. Jesus.).

PEOPLE=SHIT.

I don't even know where to start. For most of my life, my disgust for what is typically termed "post-feminism" has been growing on a near-daily basis. Apparently this is unusual among most of my mass media-brainwashed peers, as they typically are active participants in the very pseudo-culture that I most despise, and revel in propagating it.

Luckily, I've been discovering more and more that other admirable, intelligent, and highly educated folks tend to be just as disgusted with these sexist trends as I am. Not only that, but they write about their arguments with logical and factual coherence, as well as entertaining intensity. Personally, I can't even begin writing about these things without devolving into a fit of sputtering outrage, so, for your information and reading pleasure, I present to you...

Lucky Dube - "The Way It Is"

Didn't I raise my voice
High enough for you
I was running like a fugitive all the time
Risking rejection from my own people - yeah
Now that you got what you wanted
You don't even know my name
It's so funny, we don't talk anymore

Be good to the people on your
Way up the ladder
Cause you'll need them on your way down

That's the way it is

Didn't I raise my fists high enough for you
I guess I can't pat myself on the shoulder
For a job well done
Dodging bullets in the streets - I was there
Risking rejection from my own people
Now that you got what you wanted
You don't even know my name
Remember:

Be good to the people on your

====================================================================

[Note: This, like "Letter to my Accidental Mentors," while inspired by a particular individual, isn't intended for just one person, but several.]

I know it may be a little late to finally come to these conclusions, but at heart I'm actually an incurable optimist, so it's taken a few months for the cold, hard, negative reality to fully sink in.

Sitting in front of the TV watching a Sopranos rerun about an hour ago, it suddenly hit me just how completely full of shit most people are. What most people call a "relationship" is usually just two hollow, superficial people play-acting romance long enough to gain the sense of validation they so desperately crave. If it's not validation they seek, then it's sex, affection, money, or just "fun" to fill up their time (which they're generally too unintelligent and uncreative to have in some other way... hooray for STDs!). "Romance," "seduction," "courtship," and all the rest are just empty facades - games that the otherwise uninspired play to escape the pressing reality of the overall unimportance of their lives. I've dealt with and attempted to mesh with this mentality plenty of times - and I'm not bothering with it anymore. The non-superficial, like myself, simply cannot reconcile who they are with who they must pretend to be to attempt to get their emotional and sexual needs met. To us, it's such a waste of time and energy... because anything you gain from it is based on lies and boredom. Whoo-hoo. How hot. Using another human being as a tool for your own shallow gratification - how romantic, how sweet, how loving, how appreciative - No. How unfortunate... How unfortunate it is that people in my age bracket can't handle having a mirror held in front of them...How unfortunate that they don't know what real intimacy is (hint: it's NOT physical), but are so afraid of it that they tuck tail and run from it... how unfortunate that I know not a single person besides myself and two select friends (one of them also being family) who have the mental fortitude and personal integrity to face reality as it is and keep on exploring the questions that matter anyway... how unfortunate that I know of no others but the aforementioned who are willing to GROW as people in tandem with others in a way that is authentic, continuous, and compassionate. How unfortunate. How depressing. How frustrating. How utterly contemptible.

For a little over a month now, I've seriously contemplated the possibility of harnessing my extensive knowledge and abilities in the interest of gaining easy access to sex (a sort of self-overcoming through antinomianism, if you will). The problem is...the realm I would be forced to operate in is one I consider FAR beneath me, and would require me to pretend to be someone I am not. I simply don't do fake. I worship Reality and Integrity, for fuck's sake... acting contrary to my natural, honest inclinations in the interest of being sexually "commanding" and "intense" (as opposed to being personally/intellectually commanding and intense - which I naturally and most certainly am) is simply something I cannot bring myself to do.

Other people always expect me to "take the lead" in a crude, stereotypical manner, and when I don't, they act disappointed - "tough shit," I say. It's not my job to cater to your socially-reinforced, gender role-playing bullshit. If you want something, just fucking say so already and then we can fucking get on with it. If you're too much of a fucking coward to be open with your intentions and desires (or lack thereof), and if you're too goddamn stupid to understand when I express myself to you (because apparently the foxiest among us are also the most communicationally shallow and retarded), then I have no need of you. The world is run by those who show up, not by those who suggest that they might have a remote interest in running it...or then again, maybe not. I know exactly who I am and have the courage to be straightforward about it (pride, insecurities, and all), and I continuously make the mistake of expecting other people to do the same. So fucking what if I dress like a dude - that's no excuse for putting all the responsibility of moving things forward into my lap. I know plenty of straight guys who complain about this exact same thing all the time... primadonna bitches expect everyone to do the fucking work for them, and then they turn around and brag to their bitch-ass friends about "their" "conquests." It's such bullshit. If you really had any balls and were really in control, you'd make ME do what you want, instead of sitting back and letting me have my way and tell you what to do because you're too pathetic, passive-aggressive, and non-assertive to do what you want your fucking self (or to even know what the fuck you want in the first place).

Then turn around and throw me to the curb because I'm too "intense" for you. Give. me. a. fucking. break. The only one of us who EVER bothered to make any real personal sacrifices was ME. I wait for you to be real with me, and when you finally try you and I are both forced to face how empty and confused you really are. Meanwhile, I am I - confidently, genuinely, and happily. And you can't handle it. So go ahead - retreat back into your suffocating little cocoon woven of strands of your own cowardice and resulting personal stagnation. To take a cue from Jim Morrison: the snake has already eaten you. And I'm sitting on its back, enjoying the ride through the garden.

"When the serpent appears, his head is ten feet long and five feet wide. He has one red eye and one green eye. He's deadly and he's seven miles long. As he moves -- on his scales is written all the history of the world, all people, all actions, all of us our little pictures on the scales, God it's big! -- and it's eating as it moves all the time, devouring, digesting consciousness, power, a monster of energy! We must kiss the snake on the tongue, if it senses our fear, it will eat us instantly. But if we kiss it without fear, the snake will take us through the garden and out the gate. To our freedom -we must ride this snake. To the end of time." - Jim Morrison
