Gettin' Jiggy Wit It - Will Smith |
] |
I shall begin the new year in much the same way as I left the old one – consumeristic and geeky. With that in mind, then, allow me to begin this entry by exclaiming ASGDFSFJKFGHLJHG !!!
( BATSHOES. )
I’m trying to think of reasons why I shouldn’t buy these and I am coming up empty.
Also, Narnia.
( wake up, dolly daydreams )
And now I am off to watch Die Hard. YAY BRUCE WILLIS!

Firstly: a very merry Christmas to all both! I wish ye presents. I received wonderful bounty, namely a laptop! It has roughly twenty times as much memory as my current computer and has the special bonus of lacking disease, so you may colour me impressed.
Secondly: to know true joy, I suggest you place a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup between the two sandwiches of an Oreo cookie and scarf it down. DELISH.
Thirdly: I will talk about Narnia tomorrow (and I totally will, I am making a resolution about deadjournal updating and everything), but as it’s late, I shall content myself with noting that a) OH MY GOD NARNIA and b) Peter = Godric, Susan = Rowena, Edmund = Salazar, Lucy = Helga.
Eh? Eh? You totally see what I am getting at here. Greatest founding of Hogwarts ever!

So. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire!
( el spoilero )
So, more pros than cons. A good time had by all! Hey, Maryke, have you seen any of the movies except the first? I can’t imagine how you would’ve escaped CoS – everytime I go somewhere that has cable, they seem to be playing it. Still: enquiring minds want to know.
To rather abruptly change the subject, I’m sure you all know that today’s the 25th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. The really great part is that Hollywood has chosen to mark this occasion by greenlighting a film about the motivation and Really Tough Life of his killer, despite the fact that he’s said on several occasions that he killed John for the fame. And it’s going to feature Lindsay Lohan. Nice.
Buh. Tired. It’s too hot to sleep properly, how irritating is that?

I experienced the terrifying scourge of international terrorism!!!
If by “terrifying scourge” you mean “vaguely delaying” and by “international terrorism” you mean “some kid calling in a bomb threat”, which is my theory. And I do.
On the more hardcore side of things, I was totally evacuated from the train station for like twenty minutes. And! My mother’s bus didn’t come either!
GEE I SURE AM GLAD WE’VE GOT ANTI-SEDITION LAWS!!!1! SEE HOW RIGHT JOHN HOWARD WAS YOU GUYS???

I feel that my position regarding squid and octopuses is made clear by this dinosaur comic.
I am incidentally contractually obliged to link to anything involving communism. A little known fact about Modern History courses.
My exams are in TWO WEEKS and I should be studying, especially for the subject I'm currently doing poorly in what with the whole "unable to speak in public" thing. Then again, my exams are in TWO WEEKS. I think I shall go and find a movie to watch instead.
Oooh! As a side note directly related to my previous statement, Empire magazine did an article about the 20 greatest movie directors of all time, the running order going ( as follows ) and I was just wondering whether Maryke (and Maddy and Lou, I guess, whatever) would mostly agree or explode with rage.
Down to the video store!
ETA: ah hah hah! As I clicked “update” my computer froze. “NOOO!” I cried! I fumed! I wept! I yelled at my computer to get its acted together, but to no avail. So I said “screw it, I can’t be bothered typing that all out again” and went down to the shops. But on my return, lo! The update got through! VICTORY IS MINE!
Hoorah hoorah hoorah. Also, we’ve been having electrical faults on our street, so Energex dug up half the front lawns trying to get to the cables. Their encroachment on our own lawn has been rather impressive, to which end they have laid down turf. Now it looks like we have a healthy lawn or something. Odd. And wrong.
Sadly there were no movies down at our craptuous video store. I pine for Video 2000. OH HOW I PINE.

So, new planet. Named Xena, which is okay: they’ve called the moon Gabrielle, which actually rather amuses me. However, I cannot and will not stand for the idea that this new kid planet may kick Pluto off the list of planets. Come on, guys! Stop picking on Pluto! It’s a planet! It has a moon, what more do you want? After all, was it not Professor Michael Brown of CalTech who claimed that “having a moon is just inherently cool – and it is something that most self-respecting planets have”[1]?
I vote, therefore, to boycott this interloper of a planet. Because I learnt the planets. There was a mnemonic and everything. And it didn’t end with an X!

Things I Can No Longer Do On My Computer
- Run more than half an hour without being informed that I have run out of space on Drive C and should delete unneeded files. - Run Explorer for more than an hour without it experiencing a fatal error and closing all windows. - Run two programs at once without my computer freezing in a matter of minutes. - Even attempt to *open* three programs at once. - Run Photoshop. - Run Winamp. - Run Acrobat Reader. - Run MSN. - Access the network. - Download music/film clips/trailers/anything. - Save images from the internet in a format other than Bitmap after five windows have been opened (I counted).
In conlusion, life is but a hollow simulacrum, devoid of meaning.

Aaaah, Friday is off to a cracking start. My dad gave me a lift to uni, so I cut out an hour of travel time this morning. On the other hand, an ugly white car came about a metre away from smashing my side of the passenger cab into my fragile human body. That sucked.
OH MY GOD I WAS NEARLY KILLED. :: nervous breakdown ::
So, yeah. That was exciting in a horrible sort of way. But on the plus side I am here early so I can work on my assignment, which is good (again, in a horrible sort of way). And I have a very delicious lunch, consisting mainly of a roast chicken sandwich (with stuffing) and a large, tasty brownie. Hoorah for school holidays! My sister gets bored and BAKES.
I would also like to print a formal retraction, re: my opinion of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. To whit: it was awesome and funny, thereby proving Maddy right and myself wrong. Maddy henceforth has justified claim to sing the I-Was-Right Song at me. Or one of those Oompa-Loompa tunes, because they were really snazzy. And so choreographed!
And finally, in capitalistic news, someone buy me seasons 4 and 5 of M*A*S*H. And ( these boots. )
Come oooooooooooooooon. I do things for you.

Dead Finks Don't Talk - Brian Eno |
] |
I have been led to understand that my current deadjournalling efforts have been substandard.
This must be rectified!
… so.
I should like to use this forum to address the issue of FEMINISM.
As you are all no doubt aware, university – and arts degrees in particular – is filled to the very brim with feminists of every stripe. The ones I’m aware of are usually loud, often irritating and always feel the need to spread the message that the penis is tool of UTTER EVIL rivalling the bastard disturbing lovechild of Satan, Darth Vader and Adam Sandler.
However, despite all this, their plot to rally all “wymyn” kind to their flag is kind of succeeding, because they’ve got me thinking about something. See, thing is, I find myself usually despising female characters in movies or TV shows. For example, Kara/Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica – irritates me to all hell. I remember coming to the conclusion that I wouldn’t like her even if she was a guy, which is fine and all, except for how she’s a lot like Sawyer from Lost, whom I do like.
So… yes. Can people just not write female characters, or am I a product of years of patriarchal brainwashing about the role of women? AM I UNDER THEIR EVIL THRALL?
:: crickets chirp ::
I mean… uh…
Hey wait guys I’m still cool! You like… music? I love that popular music. I think it’s “jiggy”. And… uh… movies! Man, they’re *all* awesome!
Yarr. I’m not attractive engaging either of those things.

Hate To Say I Told You So - The Hives |

I get the feeling that whenever I am without a layout for my journal (live or dead) I will bring this one out again. It’s subtle, tactful and caring, just like I am.
:: secretly wishes to shoot course material in a similar manner ::
Anyway! New layout! And icons to go with it, which is fun. You do not impress Batman. He thinks you are a superstitious and cowardly lot.
In other news, I got my hair cut and now my neck is cold. I can’t help but feel a bit miffed about the timing of this – I mean, on Wednesday it was balmy t-shirt weather and now we’re given breezes from the South Pole. NOT ON. My feet are as ice, even within their two pairs of socks. Tragic.

I think that the fact this occurs on the very first day of shut-up-we're-going-to-learn-now university (as opposed to last week, hey-gosh-what-a-super-fun-place-this-is! university) is a sign that I am meant to live a life of luxury.

The days verily count down until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is unleashed upon the general public (barring the sneaky Canadians who have already read it). Truly, 2005 is Winter Of The Nerds. If only they’d delayed LotR’s release until mid-year and then our joy/tremendous-angst-which-is-a-form-of-joy would be complete.
Will HBP be the new PoA or the new OotP? Will it be Episode I: The Phantom Menace or Episode III: Revenge of the Sith? Batman Begins or Batman Forever? Even-numbered Star Trek or odd-numbered Star Trek*? The possibilities are endless (not really).
This would be an ideal time for a dance sequence ala Disney. Sadly, the world does not work that way. Instead, I’m trying to figure out the best bribe to make my sister let me read HBP first. Logic is all well and good (I finished off OotP in five hours and HBP, by all reports, is considerably shorter than that) but I think I ought to sweeten the deal.
:: plots ::
*NB: I have only ever seen one Star Trek movie, and that was The Wrath of Khan, viewed one fine winter’s midnight. (My memories of it consist mainly of Captain Kirk yelling “KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!”) I am, however, given to understand that even-numbered Star Trek movies are good, and odd-numbered Star Trek movies are bad.
