Subject: Love lovely laptop
Link
Today my lovely Ferrari laptop came back from the laptop doctor. Resolution?
"FAULTY WIRELESS LAN PREVENTED MACHINE BOOTING, REPLACED. FAULTY MAINBOARD REPLACED."
Sound a bit like the old Mastercare trick of "we don't know what wrong - let's swap the mainboard".

Still I'm dead chuffed to have it back.

I'm toying with the idea of hauling my rambling-ass over to LJ-land. I seem to be following more writers here. I'll take it for a spin, and see how it goes.

You can read my syndication (from DJ) here: [info]chisel_ljfeed.
LJers who give a toss can find me here.

Subject: Scared of spiders?
Link
I went to London Zoo with [info]realtan, [info]thedarkpoint and [info]ljeasterbunny on Saturday. The last time I went was probably twenty years ago with my (now deceased nan).

This revived a few hazy images, and reminded me of a time when she was more mobile (rheumatoid arthiritis always making mobility hard for her) and able to get out and about more.

Anyway, it was nice to wander around taking photos of animals. I managed to get to the B.U.G.S. area in time to see Polly, the red-kneed spider. The don't let people hold the spider, but they do let you get very close. I hate house spiders, I know it's irrational, but I proved to myself that larger spiders don't have the same effect on me - I was standing less than two feet away from this beauty.
One day I'll actually hold one of these magnificent animals.

I'm glad I got really close without feeling the slightest bit worried. I think it confirms that my discomfort with house spiders is the speed the little buggers move at.

I've mentioned that I'm trying to lose some flab. Arriving at work this morning, I see something on my desk - some kind of sugary fluffy sweets on a stick, and a box of JellyBelly beans.

Interesting choice considering how many people are on New Year diets and detoxes.

I wonder if I can trade it in for some nice soup and a couple of slices of bread.

Well it's just me in this particular club, and I've worked at adjusting my diet over the last month to take into account everything that was raised whe I had my appointment in December.

The nurse was pleased with everything I've done so far. Results? I managed to lose a whole pound! How sucky is that?

Looks like I'm going to have to give in and embark on a mission of regular exercise too!

It seems that this year, everything technical that I've been near has failed in some way. I think I need to take a break from the computing industry and take up something non-technical for a while ... something far, far away from any technology.

I managed to boot into my OS, and start using the laptop .... then after about 10-15 minutes, it all locked up.

Powered off, powered on, and I'm back where I started. I'm gonna try waiting again, but something feels wrong still.

Even something as simple as a computer BIOS isn't immune to bad typing/spelling. [link]

How odd - went out to get lunch, optimistically powered up the ferarri, and it's booting ... well to the BIOS at least.

I've no idea what borked ... but it might not be as critical as I thought.

What the fuck?!!! Acer support phone lines have just closed (12:17) for lunch, and re-open at 13:30!!!

Is Acer a 2-man company operating out of someone's garage?

At work this morning I powered up my laptop. Well, I pressed the power button.

The "I'm on" LED lit up, I think I heard the hard drive spin. Nothing else. No BIOS boot screen, no anything.

I'm pretty certain this is not a good sign for my shiny new laptop.

Of course, I can't do anything, because all my warraty cards, and phone numbers are at home.

Sometimes I wonder if I should follow the momentum and move over to livejournal. I read more people's rambling over there, and over time the number of people (I know) using deadjournal (and posting) is seriously dwindling.

The only thing I can see that I'd lose out on is my subscription, which runs until 2005-07-29.

Stay or move?

I don't know if this link allows everyone to post or not. I'm not sure that "Open to: all," really means *all*.

I'm still working through the linux-install on my Ferrari, but one test it passes is the "rip a cd to ogg files" where the CD is one that my Dell was having read issues with.

Yay!

Subject: Networking
Link
While I was writing the last entry I had an idea what had changed ... disabling something I was experimenting with earlier, and I get my networking back.

I like linux, but things like this prove that in some cases it's not ready for the masses. [In it's defense, I do use a very hands-on distribution, so if something goes wrong it's usually because of something I've misunderstood, or wasn't aware of.

I'm going through one of those phases where every computer related item I touch (or even don't touch) seems to b0rk itself somehow.

My old p200 (hendrix) serves as a firewall and is now regularly "just forgetting" how to network packets for me. All the windows boxes regularly drop off the network until the box is rebooted. I suspect it's aware of my plans to retire it.

My new laptop; last night and earlier today, it was happy being connected to a wired network. Tonight it refuses to communicate with the hendrix, where it gets it's network settings from. I'd like to blame hendrix, but the same process works for other boxes. (So .. I've changed something that the new laptop doesn't like ... hmm)

Although better behaved, my main ssh/email box has a habit of randomly locking up.

I sometimes wonder why I do all this ...
