This weekend has been pretty dull. Almost looking forward to work tomorrow. No...no that's not right at all. Will be heading to WV for Crimbo; probably not Toronto. Dates and stops are undetermined, but settling. All hotels must have WAN. Guess I'll go consume some more MI-5 entertainment product. I might make a fire later. p.s. Happy St. Andrew's Day. Have a Scotch. Current Music: Lush - SomaFM.com | | Thu, 27 Nov 2008 | | 23:40 |

eyecandy : tilt-shift video Tilt-shift photography used on a demolition derby, and boats in a lake. Tilt-shift is a method of film that results in a single focus point at mid-range, and a blurring of objects in the front- and back-ground. This fools your brain into thinking you're seeing miniatures. Add motion to make a film, and you get something sooo shiny. Now that I'm farsighted in one eye, nearsighted in the other, and without my glasses, this is sort of like I'm seeing everything now. | | 18:18 |
turkey-day ride It was warm today, and I was terribly bored, so I went for a nice ride up to Buford Dam and back. Made good use of my chaps. F*&^in' glasses broke when I put my helmet on. I've only had them for a few months. Hopefully there's some kind of warranty. In an hour I'll head out to the local orphan-thanksgiving. I was going to bring a scotch, because I am unoriginal, but the liquor store was closed today (duh) so I'll take a bottle of Pontarlier absinthe for sharing. Tomorrow's weather might be good for riding, too. It's a much more fulfilling idea than dishes or laundry, and I can only spend so much time staring at the infinite content box. I hope you all found something pleasant to do and/or eat today. | | Sat, 22 Nov 2008 | | 20:43 |
even more olpc updates, and frame shopping Today I switched my OLPC SD install from Gutsy to Heron (the latest stable release of Ubuntu). The updated xfce UI looks pretty nice, and the network manager applet is actually usable (but it's forgetful, and my prior alternative, wifi-radar, doesn't work right). I'm starting to get proficient with aptitude, so it didn't take me long to get everything I need installed again. Finally bought some frames for a variety of prints I've had lying around. I got 2 from Target that worked out, and a 3rd that's too small but I can't return (spare 10.5x16.5 frame anyone?). Ordered another 3 via an Amazon frame store in more complicated sizes. Unfortunately, I seem to have run out of wall space. I'll need to move things around. I still have a pair of nice canvas prints that need mats cut, which I have learned I am no good at. Those will have to sit a while longer. Discovered the 2-year warranty on my bike will run out on Monday, not in December like I'd thought, so I'll probably have to pay for them to look at the potential oil leak. OLPC G1G1 Sure, I had some troubles with my OLPC, but after a lot of hacking I've gotten it into a state that I consider usable. I'm sure that by now they've got their manufacturing issues worked out, and they won't be shipping sticky keys anymore. I still don't like Sugar, but that's because I'm not a student in a 3rd-world country. Ubuntu is much better suited for my purposes (firefox, kolmafia, gaim). I still believe that getting computers into the hands of children at a young age is one of the best things you can do for the world. By learning how to use a computer and networking, these kids will develop tools and methods that will ultimately lead to stronger economies, less poverty, and a socially enabled populace with the knowledge to shape their own countries' futures. That said, Laptop.org is starting up the Give-one-Get-one program again, this time through Amazon. Looks like the price hasn't dropped so you'll probably have the same 2 options as last year: a) Donate $200 and buy a laptop for a child who needs it, or b) Donate $400, accomplish (a) and get a lappy shipped to your door for a child in your life, regardless of age. The Amazon G1G1 program starts tomorrow, November 17. If you have spare money, consider throwing some at these innovators and help build one child's successful future. | | Fri, 14 Nov 2008 | | 11:53 |

Zombie Protest @ CDC ( 3 more) ( LOTS more, different set) | | Fri, 31 Oct 2008 | | 12:17 |
hallows eve It's Halloween, one of the few Holidays I am not morally opposed to celebrating (although I probably should be), and this year I've been too depressed to care at all. I have no costume, but I will probably throw something lame together before stopping by a couple of parties. I have no candy for children so it's important that I'm not at home.
My friends are putting on a Zombie Rights Protest at the CDC. I think I will probably show up late as a counter-protester, with an OMG Z0MB135!! or GOD HATES ZOMBIES sign.
Tomorrow, Space Rock Con at TastyWorld in Athens, GA, for the daylight hours, and a different party in ATL for the evening. | | Wed, 29 Oct 2008 | | 10:26 |
some existential prose from the singing detective "Mouth sucking, wet and slack at mouth, tongue chafing against tongue, limb thrusting upon limb... skin rubbing at skin. Faces contort and stretch into a helpless leer, organs spurt out smelly stains and sticky betrayals. This is the sweaty farce out of which we are brought into being... We are implicated without choice in the slippery catastrophe of copulations that spatter us into existence. We are spat out of fevered loins. We are the by-blows of grunts and pantings in a rumpled and creaking bed." --The Singing Detective ( 1986/ 2003) | | Tue, 28 Oct 2008 | | 14:54 |

Al-Qaeda Endorses John McCain "Al-Qaeda will have to support McCain in the coming election," said a commentary posted Monday on the extremist Web site al-Hesbah, which is closely linked to the terrorist group. It said the Arizona Republican would continue the "failing march of his predecessor," President Bush. ( link)(via POEnews) | | 10:24 |

"Dad, why are vehicles always referred to as 'feminine'? I've always found that extremely degrading." "Well, Paisley, a woman is a lot like a fine vehicle. She costs a lot, requires constant maintenance, and if you got a fast one, you gotta pay close attention. 'cause if you make one false move you'll end up all mangled in some lonesome ditch." --from deep in the Wigu Archives | | Tue, 21 Oct 2008 | | 14:28 |
